Mexican Shredded Beef
I have a "thing" about shredded meats. I just beloved how it acts like a mop for sauces, so every mouthful is so juicy.
From Shredded Chicken Tacos to Pulled Chicken Nachos, Shredded Beef Ragu Pasta and Chicken Pot Pie, Craven and Rice Soup to Crispy Chinese Shredded Chicken, if the eating experience is better when the meat is shredded – I shred it.
And Mexican Shredded Beef makes the cutting – tenfold!! In fact, I admire it so much I've recently published another version – Beef Barbacoa. This version is slightly tangy and punching through with flavour from chipotle chillies!
The sauce for this Mexican Shredded Beef is loaded with large flavours – and there'south PLENTY of it!
What goes in Slow Cooker Mexican Beef
There's a ton of spices in this that makes up the flavour of the braising liquid which becomes the sauce!
The secret ingredient is orange juice – information technology's actually quite a common ingredient in Mexican cuisine. For case, it'due south used in Carnitas (Mexican Slow Cooker Pulled Pork) and the marinade for Chicken Fajitas.
It doesn't make the broth gustatory modality orangey at all – information technology totally transforms when slow cooked, and adds a touch of sugariness and flavour into the sauce.

Recipe video to a higher place. This is how I make Mexican Shredded Beefiness. The sauce is rich, thick and total of flavor, and the beef is very tender and juicy. I use this shredded beef for tacos, burritos, enchiladas, quesadillas and even to make sliders - run into in post for listing of ideas and directions!
Spice Mix
- 1 one/two tbsp chipotle pulverization , accommodate spiciness to taste (Note 5)
- one tbsp paprika
- 1 tbsp stale oregano
- 1 tsp All Spice pulverization (ground All Spice)
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 2 tsp onion pulverisation or garlic powder OR one tsp of each
- one tsp salt and pepper , each
Beefiness
- 1 - two tbsp olive oil
- 3 lb / 1.5kg beef chuck or brisket (or gravy or whatsoever other slow cooking beef) cutting into 4 pieces
- 5 garlic cloves, minced
- one onion , diced (yellow, brown or white)
- 3/4 loving cup (185 ml) orange juice
- 2 tbsp lime juice
- 14 oz / 400g can crushed tomatoes
- 2 cups (500 ml) beef or chicken broth/stock
- 1/2 cup (125ml) water
- Salt and pepper
-
Combine the Spice Mix ingredients in a bowl. Sprinkle 4 teaspoons over the beefiness and pat so it sticks.
-
Heat the olive oil in a big heavy based pot over loftier heat. Add the beef (in batches if necessary) and brownish well on all sides. Remove onto a plate.
-
Turn the stove down to medium. If the pot looks dry, add together more olive oil.
-
Add the garlic and onion and cook for 3 minutes until soft.
-
Add the orange juice and lime juice, and scrape the bottom of the pot and then the brownish bits mix into the liquid.
-
Add together tomato, beefiness stock, h2o and remaining spice mix. Mix, so return beef into pot.
-
Put the lid on, bring to a simmer so turn the stove down so it is bubbling gently, not quickly.
-
Cook for 2 hours, and so remove lid and simmer for another thirty minutes until beefiness is tender enough to shred. (Note 2 other cook methods).
-
Remove the beef from sauce, shred with 2 forks.
-
Get out the sauce to simmer with the lid off for 10 to 15 minutes to reduce and thicken to your gustatory modality. Adjust salt to sense of taste. Optional: puree with stick blender to make information technology smooth (I do this for company)
-
Toss beef back into the sauce (tin reserve some Sauce for drizzling on tacos if you desire, there's enough).
-
Transfer beef into big dish and serve. See notes for suggestions.
Tacos
-
To brand tacos, serve the beefiness with warmed pocket-size tortillas, avocado slices, Pico de Gallo, shredded cheese, sour cream, lime wedges and extra cilantro/coriander leaves.
1. Cook fourth dimension - The cooking fourth dimension will vary depending on what cut of beef yous utilise, how heavy based your pot is (dutch ovens cook faster because they retain heat better) and likewise how thick your cut of beefiness is. This recipe is very forgiving and so even if you exit it 1 60 minutes too long, it will yet be great! Check information technology at ii hours and every thirty minutes thereafter to run across if it is "shreddable" tender.
two. Other cook methods - slow cooker for viii hours on depression, force per unit area cooker & Instant Pot on high for 50 minutes.
For Tiresome Cooker and Force per unit area Cooker - later on deglazing the pot in footstep five with the orange juice and lime juice, pour the liquid and onions into the ho-hum/pressure cooker (IP) and add all remaining ingredients + beef. Melt per to a higher place. Transfer the liquid to a saucepan to reduce the sauce on the stove, every bit required by the recipe.
Oven - after completing step half dozen, embrace and identify in 325F/160C oven for 3 - 3 ane/ii hours or until the beef is tender enough to shred. The liquid should reduce enough to brand a thick sauce. If not, just simmer it on the stove until thickened to your liking.
iii. Quantity - This makes enough for 20 - 25 tacos, 12 - xv burritos. Information technology is enough to serve 8 to 10 people.
4. Storage - To freeze or refrigerate, continue the sauce and beef split. Reheat the beef in the microwave or in the oven (covered with foil), heat the sauce then toss. Information technology'due south all-time to keep information technology separate considering otherwise I observe the beefiness gets quite soggy (specially when defrosting).
5. Chipotle pulverization spiciness! Adapt as follows:
- Mild - reduce to ii tsp to i tbsp, add 1 tsp extra coriander, plus add 1 tsp cumin
- Medium - apply ane.5 tbsp per recipe (I do this for groups of friends, skilful mid point)
- Spicy, but non accident your head off spicy - increase to 2 tbsp (I like this)
Can be annoyingly difficult to find in Australia. 🙂 At present sold in Harris Farms. It is non sold in the major supermarkets (still) merely you can find information technology in fruit & veg stores, delis and gourmet/speciality stores. It does not price much more than ordinary spices. If you can't track information technology down, I call up the best substitute is 1/2 tbsp each SMOKED paprika, cumin and cayenne pepper.
